What is an Internet site without a page with links to other sites? Obviously not a part of the World Wide Web...
Personal websites
DungeonLight
A Severus Snape (sometimes Harry Potter) fan fiction site and discussion
forum, masterminded by my ever so talented spouse.
Riibu's Kolo
It's my sister! She can draw and she can write, and who knows what else. Not
so hot on updating websites, though (but that runs in the family). She has
a blog as well, over here.
Impersonal websites
Giant in the Playground
Presently the most legendary ongoing webcomic: The Order of the Stick!
Adventuring in a world deliciously cynically governed by pen&paper
role-playing rules. Amusing to no end!
8-Bit Theatre
The legendary Final Fantasy webcomic, now concluded. Also amusing to no end!
Bob and George
The legendary Megaman webcomic, now concluded. Also amusing to no end!
Fully Ramblomatic
Internet-celebrity Yahtzee Crosshaw's site, featuring the excellent
Chzo-Trilby thriller series, and a number of funny short stories.
The Let's Play! archive
Gameplay chronicles from the infamous Something Awful forums. Some are done
in screenshots, others in video clips; some are serious, others are
hilarious. Some take artistic liberties, others not so. Hours of good
reading.
TASVideos
Tool-assisted speedruns can be interesting to watch, as game after game is
completed at superhuman breakneck speeds. The site offers both recordings
playable on emulators, and ones rendered as independent video files.
Windows 9x for the win
Although MS dropped support for the Windows 9x series long ago, the fact
remains, they can be tuned for extremely good performance, adequate security,
and excellent oldskool compatibility. This forum is a gathering place of 9x
enthusiasts, some of who are talented enough to keep writing unofficial
patches - for example, an unofficial 98 SE Service Pack 3, and KernelEx,
an extender that allows running many XP-only programs under 98!
VectorLinux
But maybe you no wish support MS hegemony? I recommend trying VectorLinux.
It is a light, sleek Linux distribution, built to avoid the bloat that some
distributions come with, and based on Slackware for maximal stability, but
with extra user friendliness.
Free Pascal
The only reason anyone uses C or its derivatives is because that is an
industry standard. Pascal is a superior programming language in many ways,
especially when using this free, modern, multiplatform compiler.
Techdirt
Read Techdirt to stay up to date on the ongoing battle between draconian
multimedia megacorporations with their political allies, against humanist
pirates who believe in personal privacy, presumption of innocence, and other
such fundamental things that some people don't value enough. Techdirt also
has articles on business models that allow culture producers to adapt and
make a profit in a world where any content made is easily pirated whether the
producer likes it or not.
Emulation News
This forum is handy for keeping track of happenings in the emulation scene.
Most new emulator releases are announced here, whether PSP, DS, SNES, PSX,
PS2, NES, MAME, or whatever.
Dino's Ultima Page
A comprehensive information and guide site for all Ultima games. Dino also
tries to report all sorts of Ultima-related news here.
High Voltage SID Collection
Retro music! The old Commodores had a very unique sound, now largely
reproducible through emulation. This site has a massive collection of SIDs
and links to playback resources.
Slick Productions' NSFE Archive
NSFE is an enhanced NES/Famicom sound format, and this site has a number of
NES game soundtracks available as NSFE's. They also made my preferred NSF
player/plugin, NotSoFatso.
Quest Studios
MIDI soundtracks and more from old Sierra adventures! The prime source for
any Sierra game music you want.
Hacki's Ultima Page
Nitpicking Ultima! Focuses on the last game, which was the worst
continuity-wise. Many of the noted mistakes and shortcomings in the games are
presented in a humorous fashion. It's been a long time since an update, but
the material is still valid.
IT-HE Software
A site with evil anti-walkthroughs for several games, beside interesting
software hacks and other stuff. If you haven't been here, go now. Seriously.
Angband.Oook.Cz
Angband is a very cool roguelike. If you get used to playing it, you won't
stop for YEARS. I should know. This site has everything Angband related,
including a forum frequented by the developers.
ScummVM
ScummVM has evolved into a sweet platform for running a wide palette of old
adventure games on modern poorly compatible operating systems. They have even
integrated FreeSCI, and ScummVM can now run all old Sierra adventures.
Exult
For playing those old Ultima 7's from when Origin still ruled.
Nuvie
For playing those old Ultima 6 and Worlds of Ultimas from when Origin still
ruled.
Ur-Quan Masters
This is a freely downloadable remake of that old cult classic, Star
Control 2, which consistently is listed among the best computer games of
all time. Space exploration, diplomacy, very well wrought alien races and
some fun space combat. The remake has about everything the original did, and
more.
OpenTTD
An open source engine, with open source replacement graphics and sounds, able
to run Chris Sawyer's old but excellent Transport Tycoon Deluxe game.
Hyper Secret Link
Hyper Secret Link
This page has any interesting downloads that didn't fit elsewhere on my site.
